A research company reported that in the first quarter of 2024, 400GbE and 800GbE module shipments increased by more than 25% month-on-month. Shipments of telecom optical modules increased by more than 35% compared to last year, mainly because of growth in 400G products.

According to the research company's (1Q24 Optical Components Report):
1.Major network companies wanted to purchase a substantial quantity of high-speed internet equipment. This equipment included 400GbE and 800GbE modules. The sales of these modules set new records.
2.This quarter, over 3 million high-speed datacom optical modules were shipped. These modules are used to support connections for AI clusters and traditional computing.

A research firm’s lead analyst said:
“Although 800GbE module shipments in the first quarter of 2024 were almost as high as in all of 2023.”
“But 800GbE suppliers have not yet met demand with shipments.”
“Although some suppliers report that lead times are shortening.”
“Demand for 400GbE and 800GbE optical modules remains exceptionally strong.”
“We expect datacom segment revenue to double in 2024.”

Other findings from the 2024 Q1 Optical Devices Report:
- Spending on Datacom optical devices increased by more than 90% compared to last year. This was driven by a strong demand for AI applications in 400GbE and 800GbE modules.
- Shipments of 400GbE and 800GbE datacom optical modules increased by over 25% from the previous quarter. Innolight is the top supplier of datacom optical modules.
- Shipments of telecom optical modules increased, mainly in 400G coherent pluggable products. These products saw a growth of over 35% compared to the previous year. Marvell and Acacia saw strong shipment growth.
- Telecom device shipments decreased compared to last year, with a 26% revenue decline in all segments except pluggable coherent.
- The coherent module market size will drop below US$5 billion in 2023. However, it will grow in 2024 and is expected to be close to US$10 billion in 2028.
