Fixed wireless CPE grew 19% year-over-year, continuing to outpace PON and cable networks. Total PON equipment spending increased 6% year-over-year, driven by an 11% increase in PON ONT spending.
According to a recent report released by a group:
In the third quarter of 2024, the global broadband access equipment market reached total revenue of $4.6 billion. This represents a 1% increase from the previous quarter and a 5% increase from the previous year.
"In some markets, fixed wireless providers continue to capture the majority of new broadband users."
"They offer a wider range of price tiers, not only targeting their mobile users, but also attracting existing cable, DSL and fiber users."
The group's vice president said:
"As a result, fixed wireless CPE shipments achieved year-over-year growth for the fifth consecutive quarter, with an increase of 19%."

In addition, this third quarter 2024 Broadband Access and Home Networking Quarterly Report also includes other highlights:
- Total PON equipment spending increased 6% year-over-year, driven by an 11% increase in PON ONT spending. ONT shipments in North America exceeded 2 million for the first time since the first quarter of 2023.
- Spending on DOCSIS infrastructure increased 26% year-over-year, with significant increases in spending on remote PHY equipment and virtual CMTS platforms.
- Residential Wi-Fi router shipments were flat year-over-year, despite a 5,935% increase in Wi-Fi 7 shipments.
- Spending on broadband access equipment is expected to rebound in 2025. However, service providers will continue to be cautious about network expansion as interest rates are expected to remain relatively high at least in the first half of the year, pushing up capital costs.
