After building fiber networks in West Des Moines and Des Moines, Iowa, and most recently in Mesa, Arizona, Google Fiber now has its sights set on cities in several Midwestern states.
Google Fiber CEO Dinni Jain promised in a blog post: "If you've been following Google Fiber, you know we've been busy lately...and Google Fiber's business will be even busier."
Jain was a former executive at cable operators such as Time Warner Television and Insight Communications. He said Google Fiber has been in talks with city leaders in five states, Arizona, Colorado, Nebraska, Nevada and Idaho in recent months, with the goal of bringing Google Fiber's fiber to the home. service to their communities.
Jain did not identify which cities are being explored or come up with any specific timeline, but noted that these states will be its main focus for growth in the next few years, while they continue to expand in their current metro areas. Jain added that Google Fiber will share more details about the new cities and "faster speeds" in the coming months.
Google Fiber's current premium service offers 2Gbit/s downlink and 1Gbit/s uplink for $100 per month. Google Fiber has all but eliminated its own IPTV management service, instead promoting several virtual multi-channel video programming distribution (vMVPD) services, including DirecTV Stream, FuboTV, Sling TV and Google's own YouTube TV.
Jain also opened the door to communities interested in building their own fiber networks, noting that Google Fiber already has civic-focused models in cities like Huntsville, Alabama and West Des Moines. "We will continue to find ways to support similar efforts," wrote Jain, who took the helm of Google's access business unit in 2018.
The following are Google Fiber's ongoing and planned network and service deployments using FTTP or its fixed wireless platform Webpass:
