New research shows that new hyperscale data centers will be almost twice the size of the current ones. This change is expected to happen over the next four years.
The important IT load of large data centers has been growing over time. Generative AI technologies and applications use a lot of energy, which speeds up this trend.

As the average IT load of one data center goes up, the number of hyperscale data centers will keep growing. Service providers will upgrade some existing data centers to increase their capacity.
By 2030, the total capacity of all operating hyperscale data centers will nearly triple compared to today.
The study looks at the data center size and operations of 19 big cloud and internet service companies. These companies are considered hyperscale operators by the research group.
This includes the biggest companies in software as a service, infrastructure as a service, and platform as a service. By the end of 2024, these companies operate 1,103 major data centers around the world.
The research group’s lead analyst said:
"The number of hyperscale data centers has doubled over the past five years, and the growth is unstoppable."
"The number of installed systems will keep growing. However, the biggest change in the market is the rise in capacity of new data centers."
"The mix of hyperscale data centers is always changing. This includes old and new centers, different regions, and whether they are owned or leased. "
"But overall, we will see GPU-oriented infrastructure doubling the capacity of new hyperscale data centers. "
